About the New Mexico Old Fashioned CX
Series. A long time ago, before gravel bikes or mountain bikes, when the weather got chilly, bike racers would ride whatever bike they had through the woods, across the fields and down little dirt lanes. Sometimes there would be steep hills or fallen logs where they would have to get off their bikes and carry them. And, since they were bike racers, they started setting up little loops and racing around them. It was fun. This was the beginning of cyclocross. I feel that the UCI with all their rules (even if they be well meaning) have kind of lost contact with this aesthetic. This series attempts to preserve this "old fashioned" cyclocross aesthetic of just riding around, through whatever happens to be out there. So what should I expect to be different VS a normal modern cyclocross race? I will try to design courses that favor cyclocross bikes over mountain bikes or road bikes. Considerable sections of the courses will be less than 3m wide, hurdles will more likely be a just a few logs thrown across the trail, and there will probably be more running than most modern CX races. You can ride any type of bike or tires you think best for the course. This year all the races will have one combined start, this is also kind of old school cyclocross. (We may have separate kids race at some venues) I hope you can make it our and that you think the races are fun. Remember the first rule of CX in New Mexico, here conveniently placed in large letters: MAKE SURE YOU HAVE FRESH SEALANT IN YOUR TIRES!!!! A good test is to hold the wheel near your ear and shake it. If you hear clear, sloshy-sloshy liquid noises you are probably OK. Weather We will run these rain or shine, but promoter reserves the right to cancel or move the course in the event of severe inclement weather or other issues. If weather looks dodgy, check the BCD Racing Facebook as I can update it from my phone. General Info: USAC licenses, annual or one day, are not required. Not a USAC race. Helmets are required. We will run generally under USAC cyclocross rules, except that you can feed anywhere, anytime, and the course will not meet USAC specs. Bikes: You can ride any bike and any tire width you wish, as long as the only motor is you. |
Entry fees will be $25 for adults, $15 U23 $5 U19 Ocate race may cost slightly more. Please sign up online, ideally the night before the night before each race so I know how many riders to expect. There are no minimums for these, but like the MTB series, if the turnout is small we may do the races more informally. Online signup is below.

9/27 Oak Leaf venue here, about 15 minutes southeast of Tijeras, NM, up in the Juan Tomas Open Space. Park around the second (eastern) trailhead. Large, old school, 3.5 mile loop which wandering through pine and oak forests, with a long fast downhill on Ponderosa and a steep runup on Spur Trail. Probable course. Please sign up online so we will know how many riders to expect. Riders will probably do 3-5 laps, depending on category and also I will have to see how long it takes to do a lap.
Group preride at 11:30 AM; start at noon. Different categories may do a different number of laps but everyone will start together.

10/18 Ocate venue here, about 1hr north of Las Vegas, NM. A circuit cut into the woods and meadows near Ocate Creek. The cottonwoods should be in their fall colors. (No actual sheep will be used as hurdles.) There are some course updates on the NMGravel Instagram.

Riders will probably do 2-4 laps, depending on category.
We have not been having minimums for races recently, but this one will have a minumum of 10 riders, which must be signed up by midnight Wednesday 11/18/26. This one has to be that way, sorry. However, hopefully with doing the deadline on Wednesday, riders will have time do schedule other Saturday activities, if the race does not happen. If the minimum is met, please go ahead and sign up anyway, even after Wednesday 11/18, as it helps me to know how many riders to expect. If you do not sign up at all and want to race, registration is not mandaratory so just show up.

11/29 Pulpo Negro venue here, in the South Valley of Albuquerque, off Isleta, south of Gun Club. A big loop (maybe 4mi?) wandering through the Bosquie and ditchroads in the area. Probably will not do the field section from last year, as it has not been irrigated with the drought. Maybe if we get a lot of rain this late summer/fall some grass will grow back.
