Classic Dirt Series - Alpine Loop MTB,
Albuquerque, NM area, Sunday 7/28/24

Note that there will be an 8 rider minumum for this race by 11PM Friday 7/26. It is a bit of a drive and will require some setup, so fewer than that, we will cancel. I will post here and on FB if we are on or not

Neutral Preride at 10:00AM, start at 10:30AM.

Course: Hilly loop way up almost of the top of the Sandias. Part of it is kind of east coast like with some loam and roots. Most of the course is narrow woodsy singletrack. Difficult, but really neat course, I think.

Classic Dirt Series Format:
The Alpine Loop MTB will be part of the Classic Dirt Series, which will be kind of like the NMES or the Dusty Roadrunner, just informal rides with no entry fees. Aside from that, they willl be normal cross country MTB races, more or less on the UCI XCO model, perhaps a bit more old school. Different courses will require different levels of marking. Shorter courses will have a preride lap, and enough marking to get you around the course, if you do the prepride. Longer courses may be GPS only. Each race will be a little different. We will provide a GPS track for all races. Hopefully there will be more of these to come.

Course marking for this specific race:
Course marking will be less than a normal race, with more in the more potentially confusing areas, but should be adequate to let you find your way around, if you do the preride lap. The preride lap is strongly recommended.
It is a good idea to have a GPS track on your bike as a backup in case you forget an intersection.

If you can do so conveniently, I recommend you preride the course. I will make a reasonable effort to mark out the course, but it will be the rider's responsibility to know the course. You are not paying a $60 entry fee tho.

If you are familiar with the area, we will take the service road south from the Ellis, parking and then take Gravel Pit, Crest Trail, and Burried cable up to the top of Upper Switchback, then back down.  Lap will be 3.3mi and we will have a 4 lap and a 2 lap group.

Course map on Trailforks.  Note that the start/finish is at the .5mi point.

GPS TRACK

We will have a 2 Lap group (about 7 mi) for less experienced riders, and a 4 lap (about 13mi) group for more experienced riders. 13 mi sounds short but I think 4 laps will take me about 1:45.

Registration:
There will be no entry fee, but if you would like to make a voluntary donation of something like $10 for my time, that would be appreciated. Please sign up below if you are coming, ideally by 11PM Friday the 26th.

Parking:
At the Ellis Trailhead, the last parking area before the crest. Parking is $5. If you do not pay it is a risk of a $50 ticket.  You can park for free along the road above or below the trailhead parking, where the road is wide enough, and there are no "No Parking" signs.  Google Maps Placemark.
