Note we
have changed the Saturday course up a bit and taken out the steep
sandy downhill and replaced it with a less steep option. I also
tweaked the course a little more to avoid a couple of hard
sections. I estimate lap times of 14-16 minutes. A new GPS
with the changes is below with the course map.

2022
Bosque MTB Stage Race
Bosque is a Spanish term for "a wood," which, in
Albuquerque, means all the cottonwood forests near the
river. Mountain bikers have been riding the bosque as long
as there have been mountain bikes, and is is kind of a
unique terrain for this part of the world, with the twisty
trails through the forest. I tried to pick the twistiest and
most technical trails I could find, to make a course that
favors MTBs over CX/gravel bikes as much as possible. (You
can ride your CX/gravel bike if you want.) Probably the
ideal machine is a rigid fork hardtail MTB with about 2.1
tires, but there are sections where the suspension feels
nice. Preride the area if you can.
2/25/2022 Friday Night Prologue TT about 5mi eastside
bosque
north of Rio Bravo (one lap of the Sunday Course, probably
backwards) Pretty much flat with some very tight sections
and some fast
sweeping corner sections. This is one of the classic Bosque
trails. You
have probably ridden some of it before. First rider will go
off at 6PM.
One minute intervals. Start times will be posted here by
midnight Thursday 3/24.
We will go lower categories first with pros last
but, if you are coming from out of town and would ilke to
request a late start time Friday night, we will try to
accomodate you. Last rider off will be about 7:05PM.
3/26//2022 Atricso Circuit (also NMORS
race), 12-21 miles westside bosque north of
Central. ~3mi circuit with a little climb and a sandy
descent. A mix of tight twisty trails and open sweepy
trails, with a little dirt road bit. About 80ft of climbing
per lap as per my GPS.
3/27/2022 Rio Bravo Circuit 15-20mi eastside
bosque north of Rio Bravo, pretty much flat with some very
tight sections and some fast sweeping corner sections. This
is one of hte classic Bosque trails. You have probably ridden
some of it before.
More course info below.
There will be a First
Time/Beginner Race
at 10:00AM on Saturday 3/26. This is intended for riders who
would just
like to try out a race, and who have little or no race
experience.
Course will avoid some of the harder sections. particularly
the climb
and downhill. Adult men with a current USAC Cat 3 license
will do the
normal course with the second wave on Sat. There is no
women's or -19
First time/Beginner race because the Cat 3 women and
beginner -19s do
the easier course anyway, just sign up for Cat 3.
|
Categories/scoring:
Due to the large number of categories this is a bit long. There may
be some slight tweaks to this later.
For the NMORS race Saturday 3/26:
We will score all NMORS categories (for series points) and some new
junior categories to accommodate school age racers. Note if you are
in a school age program, Advanced=Cat1, Intermediate=Cat2,
Beginner=Cat3. We will combine categories into three start waves for
Saturday, two for Sunday. (Fri is an ITT)
We will score the following
combined groups for stage race general classification:
A men: Men Pro, Cat 1 men & boys 17-18, Cat 2 19-39.
B Men: Cat 2 men 40+ and boys 15-15 and 17-18.
Women: Pro, Cat 1 14+, Cat 2 16+.
Stage race scoring will be by points for an omnium general
classification. Riders
below these categories, for example Cat 3s or some juniors, who wish
to do the full stage race, may race race up into these categories.
This will not mean your USAC category will change and you have to
start doing Cat 2 in all races. We will try to score you for your
NMORS category when you finish the laps for the Saturday race, and
then you can finish the laps for your stage race category. This may
or may not be possible depending on which course your group does.
You may have to choose to compete for NMORS points or the stage race
overall. Email me and I will see what we can do.
To be eligible for the GC you must start at least the Saturday and
Sunday stages. On each stage you will get 1 point for starting, 2
points for finishing and 17, 14, 12, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2
points for the top 12 places overall in the three above groups.
Note that all riders will finish on the same lap like in a crit or a
cyclocross. So the slower riders in each group will probably do one
less lap than the leaders. This is particularly relevant for say a
Cat 2 who is 15. Unless you are really fast, you are pretty much
guaranteed to just do 15 miles instead of 18, and if you are that
fast, you ought to do 18 miles anyway. Basically we are
putting some riders in that race who will probably get lapped in
order to give them the chance to race for the GC if they want.
I had to make some compromises to make this work. There is no
perfect solution. We want to try to accommodate everyone as well as
we can. The only way I could get my brain around who should be in
which group was to make a chart.
Donc, voila. (Thus, here ya go.)

Prizes:
We will have some gift certificates and small prizes for the omnium
overall. I am kind of opting for lower entry fees and no prize
money. We are not doing prizes for riders who just do Saturday, but
they will get NMORS series points. School age riders will win medals
for the Saturday race.
Online Registration:
We will use Google Forms for registration. It does not cost anything
to preregister. You can pay online or at the race via cash, check or
card. I am not going to charge late fees but please try to sign up
by 9PM on Thursday 3/24. I need to figure out how big of a crew I
need, and get TT start sheets for Friday.

General
Info:
Not USAC sacntioned, and USAC licenses, annual or one day,
are not required. Helmets are required. Aside from unrestricted
feeding of riders, and allowing spare wheels and technical support
at the start finish, this race will be run under USAC MTB race
rules.
Stage 1 & 3 Rio Bravo Bosque
Circuit about 4mi
Parking on the west side of the River north and south of Rio Bravo
Blvd, best accessed via Poco Loco St, just east of the river. Main
parking area is called the Rio Bravo Riverside Picnic Area. Google
Maps Placemark. GPS Track.
Course is pretty clean as of 3/7/22. Stage 1 TT will go CW and
Stage 3 circuit race will go CCW. Stage 1 ITT will probably
take
16-22 minutes, depending on how fast your bike goes. First rider
will
go off at 6PM. One minute intervals. Start times will be posted here
the day before. For the circuit we will start on the levee road
about
1/4mi north of the finish so that we do not have all the riders
going
into the singletrack in an uncivilized manner. MTB starts should be
civilized.
Stage 2 Atrisco Circuit, about 3
mi.
Park in the dirt lot north of Central Av just west of the
river. Google
Maps Placemark. GPS Track.
(Revised 3/21/22) very slightly different from the map below.

Course Marking Conventions
Red and green pinflags will
always be red-right and green-left. These will mark
either side of the course. Always go between them with red on the
right. If you start seeing green-right you are probably riding the
course backwards. I will occasionally place red and green pinflags
on either side of the course if it has been a while since there has
been any trail marking. These may not be near any intersection. This
is just to let you know that you are still on course.
Orange pinflags show where
not to go, and are usually in lines of 3 or more. They will be
used to block off a trail that is not on course. Do not go in
between orange pinflags. Sometimes lines of course tape also show
where not to go. Lines of tape and orange pinflags mean the same
thing: Do not cross.
Intersections will be marked
with triangular yellow arrows. Also, just beyond the intersection, I
will put up at least two sets of red and green disinflation either
side of the course. Sometimes there will also be orange pinflags
blocking entrances to roads/trails not on course.
Always default to the more
trafficked trail or road. If you are on a major trail or road, stay
on it, and do not get off on any smaller intersecting trails/roads.
It is not always possible to mark every possible little trail
intersecting a main trail or road. If the course DOES get off
a more trafficked road/trail onto a less trafficked road/trail,
there will always be some marking indicating this.
Anyone signing up late will start after 6:10PM.
